My dad was an amazing mentor, teacher, and supporter with incredible patience. He helped my buy my first car in 1968. It was a 1956 T-Bird we bought for $1,800. It only got 7 MPG so he said why don’t you rebuild the carburetor? The interesting thing was, he knew nothing about cars and never worked on them. He told me to get a rebuild kit and then number everything as I took it apart and then just put it back in the reverse order. It worked and got 14 MPG! When I bought my 240Z in 1973 he said $5000 and you only get 2 doors, you could buy 2 Pintos for that kind of money! Oh, yea, did I mention he was practical, un like me…LOL. In 1969 he bought a new T-Bird and within a few weeks I painted FLAMES on the front fenders! I’d ground my kid for life if he did that, but my dad got 2 chairs and we sat in garage looking at the car. He said what do you think my customers will say when I pull in with flames on my car? I said “don’t know, never thought about it”, he then said “I didn't think so, how soon you could paint it back to blue?” I will miss my dad! He was always there to listen and help and to share my successes with.
